State Fire Marshal Toomey reminds everyone of the importance of maintaining wood-burning appliances and chimneys, including annual cleanings. Additionally, residents should take care to properly dispose of ash away from their homes, as ash can stay hot and cause fires even days later. Combustible materials should be kept at least 3 to 5 feet away from any heating appliances. Additionally, ensure pathways to all exits, inside and outside the home, are maintained and kept clear. Anyone with questions about fire safety in their home should contact their local fire department or the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office.
